NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
We are currently seeking a dedicated and safety-focused Operations Technician to join our team at the Rokeby Site polyethylene facility near Sarnia, Ontario. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the continuous, safe, and reliable operation of our facility.
The Operations Technician is expected to progress to the top of the Process Operations progression program, including achieving all required certifications.
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
- Operate the unit in a safe, efficient and reliable manner.
- Prepare equipment for maintenance and safe work permitting.
- Ensure NOVA Chemicals’ safe work practices and policies are maintained at all times.
- Complete area safety checks and respond to hazards in the area.
- Monitor unit conditions on an ongoing basis and carry out troubleshooting steps to address identified issues.
- Report and initiate corrective actions for plant operation in assigned area.
- Conduct preventative maintenance of equipment (i.e. rounds and checks, swing pumps).
- Implement changes to operating parameters to optimize unit performance.
- Maintain housekeeping standards within the operating unit.
- Continually progress through the outside operating areas culminating in the operation of a complex DCS panel.
- Participate in team safety meetings, safety audits and follow-ups.
- Mentor and train other Operations Technicians in qualified areas.
- Participate in procedure reviews.
- Support and participate in the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
- Enter SAP notifications for equipment related problems.
What We Are Looking For:
- Chemical Production & Power Engineering Technology (CPET) Diploma or equivalent with at a minimum a 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certification (TSSA).
- 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certification is preferred.
- The successful candidate will be expected, as part of progression requirements, to obtain a 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certification (TSSA) within the defined timelines.
- Previous experience as an Operations Technician in a manufacturing plant.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot operating problems.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, high levels of personal motivation and ability to adapt to change.
- The ability to work effectively and contribute within a team environment.
- Effective communication skills to cope with a wide variety of operational priorities and work activities.
- Computer efficiency is essential.

Additional Information:
- Relocation will be considered for this position
- Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
- This position will work on a seven (7) day (including weekends and holidays), twelve (12) hour rotating days/nights schedule
- Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
- Duties will include standing, walking, bending, stooping and squatting for long periods of time as well as some lifting and some climbing of ladders within various levels of the units.
- Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
- In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
- The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
