  • This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

We are seeking a Process Engineer to join our Process Engineering Team located at our Joffre Site in Central Alberta, near Red Deer.  Reporting to the Utilities and Offsites Process Engineering Team Leader, you will provide process engineering support in achieving Utilities and Off plots business results.  You will be part of a multidisciplinary team and work with various disciplines (Engineering, Technical, Operations and Maintenance) to address unit priorities.  You will work on key process engineering and process safety work that develops competency and builds knowledge and networks within our manufacturing environment.

 

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Identify and own threats to process operation while leading multidisciplinary teams to determine root causes and the operational changes or projects required to mitigate them
  • Identify and own business improvement opportunities and execute engineering projects or process operation experiments to achieve the benefits
  • Monitor process performance to identify day to day operating issues and use root cause analysis techniques to determine the necessary adjustments to return to the desired operating state
  • Monitor process performance to identify day to day optimization opportunities and work with a multidisciplinary team to make the operational changes to achieve them
  • Support the development of expense and capital project business cases based on operating expertise in your areas of responsibility
  • Participate in capital and expense project field turnover steps such as: construction inspections, commissioning and pre-start-up safety reviews
  • Participate in the identification, planning and execution of equipment outages and major turnarounds
  • Support the completion of process studies and development of operating strategies for equipment in your areas of responsibility

 

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or eqivalent, with typically 8+ years of related engineering experience 
  • Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or an equivalent Canadian engineering governing body
  • Experience with water treatment would be considered an asset. Water treatment experience should include a basic understanding of water chemistry, coagulation and flocculation, filtration and corrosion control
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office software suite, Aspen Simulation Packages, Aspen Process Explorer, iPrism, FluidFlow Hydraulics and SAP would be considered an asset
  • Comprehensive understanding of PFDs, P&IDs, control philosophies and heat and material balances
  • Experience with a variety of process hazard / risk analysis techniques 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-discipline teams (i.e., Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and Technical teams)

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role may require ad hoc travel as needed
  • Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
  • Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
  • The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
