We are seeking a Fired Equipment Specialist to join the Fired Equipment Improvement Team at our Joffre site in Central Alberta, near Red Deer.  Reporting to the Fired Equipment Improvement Team Leader, you will provide technical support to operations and engineering teams for the design, operation, and maintenance of fired equipment combustions systems. You will work collaboratively with vendors, industry, and regulatory bodies to ensure NOVA Chemicals maintains regulatory compliance. You will lead and implement change – driving continuous improvement in the safe and reliable operation of fired equipment. You will be an active member of the Fired Equipment Improvement Team, with emphasis on combustion safety. 


You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Provide technical expertise to ensure fired equipment combustion systems are designed and operated to achieve safe and reliable performance (burners, combustion control, and burner management systems)
  • Ensure a proactive approach is in place to influence and comply with Gas Code requirements
  • Work with Alberta Municipal Affairs and third-party inspection/certification bodies to develop relationships and support Gas Code compliance activities
  • Support the Manufacturing West Quality Management Plan as the Gas Discipline Lead
  • Ensure NOVA Chemicals management systems and standards for fired equipment achieve and maintain regulatory compliance
  • Provide technical support to operations, maintenance, engineering, and research - assisting with fired equipment operational improvements and troubleshooting
  • Manage risks, identify opportunities, and drive continuous improvement in design, operation, and maintenance of combustion systems


What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Applied Science OR 2-year technical school diploma
  • Candidates with an engineering degree must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P Eng.) with APEGA or equivalent Canadian engineering governing body
  • Preference for 10+ years of experience in design and operation of fired equipment combustion systems within the chemical industry
  • Proven experience with fired equipment combustion systems (engineering and operations) within olefin and polymer process units, supported by a solid understanding of unit operations
  • Ability to provide technical direction with respect to the operation and maintenance of fired equipment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, working with vendors, industry peers and regulatory bodies to achieve results
  • Ability to develop and implement systems and procedures across operating units 
  • Strong initiative, problem solving skills, and attention to detail
  • Strong knowledge of combustion principles, combustion safety, codes and standards related to combustions system design and operation, and application of Safety Instrumented Systems related to combustion systems
  • Effective engagement with operations, engineering, and research personnel
  • Experience in process hazard analysis and LOPA, particularly as it applies to fired equipment and burner management systems
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others in a team environment
  • Good written and oral language skills

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 10% travel
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
