We are seeking an energetic Analytical Lab Technician to join the Joffre Analytical Services Team at our Joffre Site in Central Alberta, near Red Deer. In this role, you will be responsible for the analytical testing, results interpretation and to go beyond data in support of the Manufacturing West (MW) Production facilities at the NOVA Chemicals Joffre site. Primary function consists of the analysis of routine and non-routine hydrocarbon samples (Liquid LPG & Vapor), waters (Wastewater, Sewage & Cooling Towers), as well as the maintenance and troubleshooting of various lab instruments.
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
- Adhere to NOVA Chemicals Responsible Care® standards and principles
- Perform chemical analysis of process and compliance samples using instrumentation and methods such as:
- BTEX Headspace, Simulated Distillation, and PIONA by Gas Chromatography
- VOCs by GCMS Purge and Trap
- Metals by ICP
- Various wet chemistry methods
- Actively participate in instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
- Actively participate in method selection and investigations of method quality and failures
- Participate in and lead projects for the selection and commissioning of new analytical equipment
- Maintain conformance to the ISO 17025 standard to meet the requirements of CALA accreditation
- Generate and analyze statistical data to maintain quality control of existing equipment and testing procedures
- Audit to internal and external quality and safety standards
What We Are Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical technology diploma or equivalent
- 2+ years of chemical laboratory experience would be considered an asset
- A strong safety and environmental attitude to support site Responsible Care® Principles and regulatory requirements
- Familiarity with the requirements of ISO 17025
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel with strong computer skills; experienced with chromatography software and knowledgeable in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Mechanically inclined, with an aptitude for instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Highly self-motivated and focused on achieving goals; skilled at balancing independent work with teamwork and managing priorities to deliver results
- Proven ability to adapt to new situations/challenges and embrace change and new ideas
- Exposure to cross-discipline functions such as purchasing, budgeting, and project management

Additional Information:
- Relocation will be considered for this position
- Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
- This role follows a rotating schedule: 10-hour day shifts over a 6-week cycle, including weekends and statutory holidays
- Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
- Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
- The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
