NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
We are seeking Operations Technicians at our Olefins Plant located in Geismar, Louisiana. The successful candidates will be responsible for troubleshooting, operating and maintaining equipment such as cryogenic processing equipment, caustic/amine treating equipment, fired heaters, turbines, pumps, engines, compressors, gas processing pneumatic and electronic controls and distributing process control systems.
We are looking for entry level to highly skilled technicians who will enjoy being part of our collaborative team.
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
- Operate complex equipment such as controls that regulate flow, pressure and temperature of feedstock products and chemicals.
- Responsible for proper mechanical functioning of equipment.
- Observe and determine from controllers and recorders malfunctioning equipment and process operation.
- Conduct scheduled routine inspections of operating areas to observe operating conditions and report any irregularities.
- Collect and record operating data, run a variety of routine control checks during operation and make appropriate operational changes to ensure maximum plant efficiency.
- Take composite samples of liquefied gases for quality control and process efficiency.
- Install, repair and modify equipment as necessary to meet various operational requirements.
- Follow standard practices and procedures as established for plant operations.
- Be required to observe and practice at all times plant safety rules and regulations.
- Perform all necessary housekeeping duties in area.
- Lend assistance and perform other duties as required.
- Know plant emergency shutdown and shelter in place procedures.
- Know area specific emergency procedures and firewater systems.
- Observe all environmental regulations and procedures.
- Participate in all phases of Process Safety Management including the Management of Change (MOC) program and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) walk downs.
- Support mechanical and instrumentation control activities associated with turbines, compressors, amine, and measurement systems to ensure balances are within the established limits.
What We Are Looking For:
- The successful candidate will have completed an Associate’s degree in Process Technology OR will have a minimum of 1 year of chemical plant experience.
- Previous experience with distillation equipment, gathering facilities, dehydration equipment, caustic/amine units, measurement equipment, compression, pumps, and pipeline equipment, fired furnaces

- Strong problem solving and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot operating problems
- A desire to learn and apply new technical concepts in a timely manner.
- A strong ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, complete multiple tasks and contribute within a team environment.

- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Additional Information:
- Relocation will be considered for this position
- Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
- This position will work on a seven (7) day, twelve (12) hour rotating days/nights schedule
- Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
- Duties will include standing, walking, bending, stooping and squatting for long periods of time as well as some lifting and some climbing of ladders within various levels of the units.
- Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
- In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
- The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
- The position will require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC®) through the Transportation Security Administration.
