The Sr. Mechanical Reliability Engineer is responsible for support and improvement of equipment in the Geismar Olefins facility.  The goal of this position is to improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) while supporting demands related to maintaining safe and efficient operation. 


You Will Use Your Expertise To:

Plant Support

  • Direct technical leadership and support for troubleshooting of equipment failures, determining root causes and identifying actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Development and review of work scope for unit outages and major turnarounds
  • Acting as vendor/contractor interface based on responsibilities defined by our Designated Site Representative (DSR) procedure.



  • Developing and managing the reliability strategy for mechanical assets, including the selection of technologies for preventive and predictive maintenance programs
  • Leading and/or participating in the use of analytical tools to ensure optimal practices are applied to equipment using established reliability methods such as RBI (Risk Based Inspection), FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis), RCFA (Root Cause Failure Analysis), Crow–AMSAA plots, Weibull analysis, RAM modeling etc.
  • Review of new equipment designs to ensure maintainability and reliability issues are considered and addressed


Focused Improvement

  • Collaborating with Maintenance, Operations, Inspections, Engineering, and Turnaround teams to identify and lead mechanical focused improvement initiatives
  • Provide project design and management for unit improvement projects through the facility change management process.
  • Applying developed Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement methods to define, measure, analyze, improve and control key projects to improve asset availability and capability


What We Are Looking For:

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, with 10+ years of engineering experience in a petrochemical manufacturing facility preferably with Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation. The candidate in this role will also be required to have:

  • Familiarity with codes and regulations applicable to own, operate, and maintain pressure equipment
  • Applied knowledge of design and maintenance of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, and other pressure components as well as a working knowledge of ASME and API codes
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Operations, Maintenance, and Technical teams
  • Demonstrated ability to use Reliability tools. (ex. RCFA facilitation, RCM participation, Continuous Improvement training, failure growth analysis etc.)
  • Working knowledge of predictive/preventative maintenance tools/practices and inspection techniques
  • Working knowledge of CMMS systems (SAP) and the ability navigate and to data mine for reliability trends.
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own workload with minimal supervision, managing multiple projects and tasks in a dynamic work environment

Located just south of Baton Rouge and employing more than 120 people, the olefins facility in Geismar, Louisiana, annually produces approximately 1.95 billion pounds of ethylene and 114 million pounds of polymer grade propylene. It also produces 13 million gallons of crude butadiene and 14 million gallons of Debutanized Aromatic Concentrate per year.


Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position.
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.
  • This role requires up to 10% travel.
  • Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
  • Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
  • On-call support may be required of the role during plant emergencies and outages due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
