NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

 

We are currently seeking a Senior Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Specialist for our Geismar, Louisiana facility.  This role is accountable for developing, implementing, and managing the preventative and predictive maintenance programs for all instrumentation, electrical and analyzer equipment within the site using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

 

In addition to leading these programs, the Specialist provides essential daytoday operational and maintenance support, serving as a key technical resource for troubleshooting and resolving I&E issues to keep the facility operating safely, efficiently, and effectively.

 

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Support the I/E Maintenance and Operations Teams with assessment, implementation, and project management of facility I/E needs.
  • Identify causes of unreliability and propose solutions to meet site goals.
  • Conduct and support root cause failure analyses (RCFA) on affected electrical, instrument, analyzer and controls equipment.
  • Generate new and/or update equipment specifications for electrical, instrument, analyzer and controls equipment based on results of failure analysis.
  • Develop and implement site predictive and preventative maintenance procedures for electrical, instrument, analyzer, and controls equipment.
  • Identify and manage cost savings opportunities to reduce the site’s fixed and/or variable costs.
  • Gather and interpret event reports from electrical relays, instrument diagnostics, DCS, SIS systems, or other software to ascertain the initiating event of related equipment failures.
  • Review and approve electrical, instrument, analyzer and controls equipment design, technology, and installation specifications for projects generated by the Capital Improvement (Engineering) Department to ensure best practices are implemented.
  • Identify, develop and review critical scope for turnaround jobs and provide field support to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with the Center of Excellence (COE) and Cross Network Teams to capture and identify learnings to which will be implemented at the site to improve reliability. 
  • Develop and/or modify settings, logic diagrams, loop sheets, specification sheets, electrical schematics, one-lines diagrams, etc. for electrical, instrument, analyzer, and controls equipment.
  • Review results of predictive and preventative maintenance, commissioning, QA/QC, and acceptance testing of electrical, instrument, analyzer, and controls equipment.
  • Provide technical assistance to the I&E Maintenance Technicians on certain specialized electrical, instrument, analyzer and controls equipment applications and equipment when necessary. (e.g. diagnosing variable frequency drive issues).
  • Sponsor, draft, route, and drive to completion Management of Change (MOC’s).
  • Provide support and approval for I&E Engineering Packages to support Maintenance Projects, Bad Actors, and Continuous Improvement efforts for non-capital related projects.

 

What We Are Looking For:

BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) from an accredited university with 10+ years of related engineering experience

OR

14+ years combination of post-secondary technical education and related I&E experience OR 14+ years of progressive experience in an I&E related role, preferably in a chemical manufacturing facility

  • Significant industry-related experience required.
  • Strong familiarity with Process Safety Management (PSM).
  • Strong commitment to Responsible Care® principles, with demonstrated excellence in occupational safety, process safety, and environmental stewardship.
  • Hands-on experience with a wide range of electrical, instrumentation, and analyzer equipment (this role interfaces with all three).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support I&E projects and maintenance upgrades.
  • Experience with chemical plant design, process equipment, and utilities.
  • Mastery of basic electrical theory and broad knowledge of instrumentation and analytical technologies for specifying and applying equipment.
  • Knowledge of test equipment, methods, and troubleshooting techniques for electrical, instrumentation, analyzer, and controls systems.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical fundamentals within an industrial environment.
  • Ability to perform detailed equipment inspections and take accurate field measurements.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency in PC use and related software for data collection, analysis, and creation of spreadsheets, databases, and reports.
  • Strong basic math and algebra skills for technical calculations.
  • Excellent problemsolving and rootcause analysis capabilities.
  • Ability to coach and mentor developing team members.
  • Effective facilitation and communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive, professional working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 10% travel
  • This position is eligible for the 9/80 schedule
  • Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
  • Duties will include standing, walking, bending, stooping and squatting for long periods of time as well as some lifting and some climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
  • Callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
  • The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
  • The position will require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC®) through the Transportation Security Administration
