NOVA Chemicals’ Geismar facility is seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join their team to work collectively and collaboratively with the manufacturing facility to provide loss prevention and risk management support to the unit, projects, and corporate initiatives focused on the achievement of safe, reliable, and competitive operations.

 

The successful candidate will also interact with the corporate Process Safety Center of Excellence to collaborate on Process Safety related initiatives beyond the Geismar site. 

 

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Lead NOVA Chemicals’ Process Safety and Risk Management programs at the Geismar Facility.  Including, acting as a resource for technical staff in the application of NOVA Chemicals’ Loss Prevention Standards, Responsible Care® Standards, and Process Safety procedures
  • Ensure that all activities pursuant to compliance with “Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals” (OSHA 1910.119) and “Risk Management Program” (EPA 40CFR Part 68) are effectively coordinated
  • Champion a culture of Process Safety excellence at the Geismar facility
  • Work to resolve Process Safety recommendations
  • Support qualitative and quantitative risk analysis for a variety of operational and project problems
  • Manage and conduct the 5-year Process Hazard and Risk Analysis program for the Geismar facility, including tracking and assisting with any resulting recommendations
  • Facilitate and support the Management of Change program, including supporting related risk reviews
  • Facilitate, conduct, and coach others on the use of risk analysis techniques
  • Provide technical expertise for Process Safety ad-hoc studies and site-wide initiatives
  • Provide support for Process Safety incident investigations and the gathering and analysis of Process Safety metrics
  • Conduct and/or support regional and corporate audit and assurance programs, as well as interaction with the insurance community
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness across NOVA Chemicals related to catastrophic threats facing the Geismar facility
  • Serve as site representative for Process Safety Related matters

 

What We Are Looking For:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with 10+ years of related engineering experience.

  • Post Graduate Process Safety related education would be considered an asset
  • Process design, maintenance or reliability experience would also be an asset
  • CCPS Process Safety Certification (CCPSC) or eligibility, would be considered an asset for this position
  • Strong math and science skills (probability, statistics, and experimental design in particular)
  • Strong computer skills, as related to data analysis 
  • Ability to work within multidiscipline teams and manage multiple priorities
  • General understanding of industry standards and practices related to Process Safety and applicable Process Safety regulations, such as Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (OSHA 1910.119) and Risk Management Program (EPA 40CFR Part 68)
  • Familiarity with Loss Prevention Standards, Responsible Care® Standards, 5-year Process Hazard Assessment programs, and Process Safety Life-cycle Management experience would be considered an asset for this position
  • Familiarity with Process Safety industry groups such as the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and knowledge of the work of the Chemical Safety Board (CSB)

 

Location:

Located just south of Baton Rouge and employing more than 120 people, the olefins facility in Geismar, Louisiana, annually produces approximately 1.95 billion pounds of ethylene and 114 million pounds of polymer grade propylene. It also produces 13 million gallons of crude butadiene and 14 million gallons of Debutanized Aromatic Concentrate per year.

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Cross border / international moves involving immigration will be considered for this role
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 15% travel
  • Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
  • Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
  • On-call support may be required of the role during plant emergencies and outages due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
  • The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
  • The successful candidate must possess or be eligible to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
