NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
We are seeking a Turnaround Planner to join our Turnaround (TA) Team to support Manufacturing East (ME) regional planning. This team executes turnaround events with varying levels of cost and complexity. In this position you will be responsible for leading the development of detailed job plans and packages for our turnaround execution teams.
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
- Document / Execute the plan-to-plan (a plan to complete detailed planning of each scope), report planning status and estimated completion dates.
- Write planning basis document to outline assumptions, planning quality requirements, etc.
- Lead / participate in constructability reviews for critical path scopes, densely populated / complex work areas, major project schedule integration, etc.
- Lead general contract planning teams during detailed planning through to event execution.
- Coordinate the preliminary planning / High Level Estimate’s with other area planners.
- Review the TA work scope notification to ensure detailed information is provided. Also collect missing information to suit detailed planning requirements.
- Prepare and maintain effective and efficient detailed execution plans, packages and libraries that identify all requirements including all specialty tools, all labour, materials and external services to safely execute the work.
- Identify required permits to execute the work – CSE / Hot Work / Impairment / Pipe Plug Authorization / Excavation Supplement and any safety considerations or specific procedures to complete the scope safely.
- Understand and commit to the corporate Maintenance Work Management (MWM) processes, standard, procedures and working instructions.
- Work with event management teams to coordinate execution strategies across multiple manufacturing units, ensuring that relevant information from identified resources is incorporated into multidisciplinary tasks.
- Sequence the job to ensure maximum tool time and minimize equipment down time
- Identify waste creation activities (sandblasting, vac truck contents, etc.) to facilitate a waste disposal plan.
- Complete crane and rigging plans.
- Support turnaround benchmarking efforts (Solomon, internal KPI targets).
- Leverage SAP, Primavera, and digital tools for integrated planning and real time updates.
- Create task list as needed and ensure it is accurate.
- Create and maintain planning history files and job libraries.
- Perform and lead job plan reviews after execution to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
What We Are Looking For:
- 2 Year Technical school diploma or (Red Seal) Journeyperson certificate with 10+ years of related experience OR 12+ years combination of post-secondary technical education and related experience.
- Strong commitment to Responsible Care Principles through demonstrated excellence in occupational safety, process safety and environmental stewardship.
- Experience in petrochemical, gas, or heavy oil processing plants, with a strong background in planning preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PdM), and corrective repairs of all types of piping jobs and equipment.
- Expert level proficiency in industry standard software’s (SAP, Primavea, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.) and related tools (Bluebeam, SPF, Smart plant, and other industry 3D modeling programs)
- Strong troubleshooting, conflict management, leadership and facilitation skills
- Ability to work with and mentor developing team members and provide focal point coverage for contract personnel
- Demonstrated initiative and organizational skills, mechanical aptitude, technical knowledge and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively and independently with Maintenance, Construction, Operations and Engineering Teams
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal and time management skills
- Focused attention to detail with excellent documentation skills

Additional Information:
- Relocation will be considered for this position
- Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
- This role requires up to 10% travel between the Manufacturing East Sites
- Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
- Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
- Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
- In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
- The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
