We are seeking a passionate and professional person to join the Applications Lab Team as a Research Technologist at our Centre for Performance Applications (CPA) located in Calgary, Alberta. The successful candidate will be part of the Applications and Physical Testing Team and support continuous innovation within the organization. 

 

The Applications Lab maximizes value for our clients by providing highly skilled resources and state of the art test equipment while continually innovating in order to optimize existing test methods, expand our capabilities and improve efficiency. Our internal and external clients depend on us for accurate, reliable, timely and cost effective testing. Our Applications team in the Innovation department collaborates across the organization and with our customers to improve their and our business performance.

 

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Conduct polyethylene product evaluations using a variety of testing equipment in support of external customers, manufacturing, technical service and product development
  • Understand equipment limitations, troubleshoot equipment, operate and maintain polymer processing equipment
  • Perform sample analysis and physical tests on polyethylene (PE) plastic film, molded parts and resin pellets, using a variety of specialized instrumentation and laboratory methods
  • Perform lab/equipment-related maintenance and housekeeping
  • Initiate and contribute to projects for the continuous improvement of safety, quality, testing efficiency and team processes
  • Collaborate with Technical Service Specialists on customer complaints and opportunities
  • Help maintain effective team/lab operations

 

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelors of Science/Engineering degree with 3 - 5 years of related experience OR technical school diploma with 6+ years of related practical experience
  • Any of the following diploma programs would be considered an asset: Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Materials Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology
  • Familiarity and experience with processing and extrusion of polymers, particularly polyethylene, would be considered an asset
  • An aptitude and proven ability for learning new concepts and procedures
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort in operating semi-commercial scale equipment
  • A solid working knowledge of PC software such as Outlook, Word and Excel
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to thrive in a team setting and also work independently with strong self-motivation

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role may require ad hoc travel as needed
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
  • The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
