We are seeking talented and passionate people who enjoy working in a collaborative, innovative environment to join our dynamic team. Through our commitment to Responsible Care®, we take pride in our focus on safety and responsibility.

This role will be a member of the Polyethylene Execution Excellence R&D team at the Centre for Applied Research (CAR) located in Calgary, Alberta. Our research programs are focused on NOVA Chemicals’ polyethylene manufacturing assets and are targeted to:

  • Improve asset operating efficiencies and competitiveness.
  • Develop models and process operating conditions which will allow for cost-effective process optimization, implement NOVA Chemicals Digitalization’s strategies, and manufacture value-added products.
  • Provide plant support to the polyethylene manufacturing asset for enhanced reliability and operation excellence.

This position requires a strong knowledge of fundamental Chemical Engineering principles and skills in applied statistics, modeling & process simulation methods to carry out research projects in related areas. Experience with polyethylene polymerization processes (gas phase, solution phase, high pressure, etc.) is highly desirable.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Initiate or lead projects that pertain to the exploration, development, and implementation of process improvements, new or existing products, and catalyst solutions. Meet research or other project goals within time and budget constraints.
  • Collaborate with product scientists, catalyst chemists, manufacturing staff and other disciplines to enable implementation of improvement ideas, commercialization of new process developments and scale up of value-added products.
  • Develop advanced process models and steady state/dynamic process simulations by applying thermodynamics, mass transfer and heat transfer principles.
  • Process complex data, usage of advanced analytics and mathematical models to enable better decision-making and drive actions.
  • Support plant operations and troubleshooting through identifying problems and applying original and innovative thinking to produce new ideas and create innovative solutions.
  • Engage in knowledge building programs and method development with respect to reaction kinetics, process simulations and scale up rules.
  • Communicate results and findings to project team members, technology, engineering, manufacturing staff and leadership through meetings, presentations, technical memos and reports.

What We Are Looking For:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with 6+ years related experience or a MSc in Chemical Engineering with 10+ years of experience that includes working with polymerization technologies, statistical analysis, plant troubleshooting, and process simulation tools. Registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or Provincial equivalent is required.

In addition, the successful candidate will have:

  1. Experience with the following areas: polyethylene polymerization processes (gas phase, solution phase, high pressure); reaction modeling; polymerization technology development/design/operations and troubleshooting.
  2. A strong background in Chemical Engineering fundamentals, experience with research programs, and ability to learn quickly in dynamic environment.
  3. Proficiency in static and dynamic process modeling utilizing commercial software packages (experience with HYSYS, Aspen Plus, gPROMS or other simulation software is preferred).
  4. Proficiency in process thermodynamics for polymeric materials, with strong understanding of transport phenomena (fluid flow, heat & mass transfer) and reaction kinetics.
  5. Expertise in developing and implementing advanced data analytics, applied statistics, and automation tools, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MatLab, Fortran, or Labview.
  6. The ability to work well in a team setting with cross-functional interactions spanning R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Technical services, with excellent consultation and communication skills.
  7. A demonstrated commitment to Responsible Care®, strong project and time management capabilities, and aptitude for problem solving/troubleshooting.

You Can Stand Out If:
