This role will be a member of the Feedstock Solutions and Sustainability R&D team at the Centre for Applied Research (CAR). This team delivers new technologies that ensure environmentally sustainable and secure access to cost effective feedstock for NOVA Chemicals. Our research programs are targeted to: 

  • Identify and optimize olefin feedstock technologies that support the transition to a circular economy.
  • Innovate processes that enable a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for our commercial assets.  
  • Invent and/or develop catalytic technologies that deliver flexible feedstock options for NOVA Chemical’s business.
  • Develop models, processes, and operations that support scale up of nascent chemical technology.
  • Design and construct laboratory equipment that can be used to validate new chemical technology concepts.
  • Research and assess new value stream opportunities associated with the energy transition and emerging circular economy needs.


You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Design and execute experimental plans that lead to new catalysts for recycled, renewable, or decarbonized olefin feedstocks.
  • Independently research and propose bold and innovative project ideas.
  • Prepare, formulate, and test new catalytic technology.
  • Create technology transfer documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal and external groups (including catalyst vendors) to facilitate scale-up of catalyst technology from laboratory to pilot and/or commercial scale.
  • Contribute to creation and protection of NOVA’s intellectual property.
  • Search publicly available literature to review and evaluate nascent chemical technology for practical integration with NOVA’s processes.


 What We Are Looking For:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry, with at least three years experience in catalyst research (heterogeneous catalysis is preferred):

  • Knowledge of physical and chemical characterization of solid-state materials and heterogenous catalysts chemical/surface phenomena.
  • Experience in evaluating heterogeneous catalysts via batch or continuous process conditions.
  • Familiarity with catalyst formulation and shaping is an asset.
  • Experience with developing catalyst synthesis from bench to pilot scale.
  • Demonstrated inventiveness in new chemistry.
  • Skilled at communicating with across a range of subject matter expertise levels
  • A commitment to Responsible Care® and aptitude for problem solving/troubleshooting.
  • A passion for sustainability is an asset.
